The lava fields of Iceland-- and there many-- can actually be quite treacherous. Lava produces several gases, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and even hydrofluoric acid. When lava mixes with seawater, it can produce the highly lethal hydrochloric acid, which is a highly corrosive substance. But what really makes them dangerous is their ever-changing nature. By some estimates, 5-10 people die every year in Iceland from falling into a crack or fissure in the fields. Many people routinely get lost in the fields, but most are found in various states of dehydration and exhaustion. The ones that die are often the ones search teams cannot find, and it is often assumed the lava has changed the topography and buried the person.
Lava fields tend to look very different depending on how old they are and how much they have changed recently. Based on the amount of green moss on the rocks in this comic, it can reasonably be assumed this field hasn't seen any drastic changes recently.
