Originally, José was an afterthought when I first wrote JC. After several months of just having Juan and Caitlin goofing off, I realized Juan was missing something, and in a way so was Caitlin: They needed a third member to their group. So José was written into the storyline. He never had an introductory story of his own; rather, he appeared in a 6-day silent strip series, and just kept appearing after that. During the rewrites, I realized José is too pivotal a character, with too much depth and potential to just be slid in sideways. So I brought him in a bit earlier to make him more meaningful. I think it was the right decision.
